Rare animals: blue whale
- Did you know the blue whale is the largest animal on the planet today? It weighs more than 30 elephants and its heart is the size of a small car. (Imagine that next time you’re in your parents’ car!)
- It has lived in our oceans for about 10 million years. It is now one of the world’s endangered species.
- The biggest threats to blue whales are overfishing and pollution. An adult blue whale has to eat about 4 tons of krill every day. That’s about as much as 3.5 million LEGO® bricks weigh! Whales can’t sort or spit out waste like plastic, and it hurts them when they eat it by accident.
- A lot of people around the world are working to reduce ocean pollution so the whales can live and feed safely, and grow in numbers. Hopefully the blue whale will still be around for millions of years to come!
